Unveiling Secrets of Star Formation: Astronomers Discover Longest Dusty Trail Around Young Brown Dwarf

A dusty trail of a young brown dwarf has been discovered in the outskirts of the Trapezium Cluster, a star-forming region in the Orion Nebula. The trail is remarkably uniform and stretches over 1,700 astronomical units (au), making it one of the longest and most intriguing features of its kind.


The discovery was made using data from the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRCam’s advanced optics and detectors allowed astronomers to capture a clear image of the trail, which is only about 24 au wide at its midpoint. The trail is so narrow that it would be equivalent to a human hair stretching from New York to Los Angeles.


The team behind the discovery believes that the dusty trail may be the result of a weak radiation-driven wind from the circum-brown dwarf disk, caused by the nearby O stars in the region. This type of phenomenon has not been observed before, and the find could provide new insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems.


The brown dwarf itself is about 0.018 times the mass of our sun and is located near the edge of the Trapezium Cluster. It’s a relatively cool object, with a surface temperature of around 2,000 Kelvin (compared to the sun’s surface temperature of about 5,500 Kelvin). The team used NIRCam’s filters to study the brown dwarf’s properties and found that it has an extremely high extinction value, indicating that its surroundings are very dusty.


The discovery of this dusty trail is significant because it provides a unique opportunity for astronomers to study the interaction between a young star or brown dwarf and its environment. By studying the trail, scientists can learn more about how these objects form and evolve over time, which could ultimately help us better understand the origins of our own solar system.


In addition to the dusty trail, the team also discovered a faint, cool companion object near the brown dwarf. This companion may be a planetary-mass object or even a small star, and its discovery could provide further clues about the formation of planetary systems around low-mass stars.


The JWST’s NIRCam instrument has already made several significant discoveries since its launch earlier this year, including the detection of water vapor on a distant exoplanet. The dusty trail discovered in the Trapezium Cluster is just one more example of the instrument’s capabilities and the exciting new science it is enabling.
