AI-Powered Diagnostic System for Falcons

Friday 21 March 2025

A new approach to diagnosing diseases in falcons has been developed, using artificial intelligence (AI) to classify various health issues affecting these birds of prey. The system combines two existing deep learning models, ConvNeXt and EfficientNet, to create a more accurate and efficient diagnosis tool.

Falconry is an ancient practice that requires vigilant monitoring of the health of these birds, which can be affected by diseases such as liver disease and Aspergillosis. Traditional methods of diagnosing these conditions can be time-consuming and invasive, but this new AI-powered system offers a faster and more accurate alternative.

The researchers used a dataset of 610 labeled images of falcon endoscopy to train the AI model. The images were randomly divided into training (80%), testing (20%), and validation sets to ensure the model’s performance was not biased towards any particular class.

The ConvNeXt and EfficientNet models were fine-tuned on the dataset, and their performances were compared using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and a confusion matrix. The results showed that the concatenated AI model outperformed both individual models, achieving a testing accuracy of 98%.

The system’s performance was further evaluated by creating a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, which plots sensitivity against specificity at different threshold settings. The area under the ROC curve provides a quantitative measure of the model’s overall discriminatory power.

This new AI-powered diagnostic tool has the potential to revolutionize the field of falconry, allowing for faster and more accurate diagnosis of diseases in these magnificent birds. It also highlights the importance of developing AI models that can be used in specific domains, such as animal health, where traditional methods may not be effective or efficient.

The system’s accuracy and efficiency make it a valuable tool for veterinarians and falconers alike. With its ability to classify various health issues affecting falcons, this AI-powered diagnostic tool is set to play a significant role in the conservation and management of these incredible birds.
