Tag-Pag: A Tool for Efficiently Annotating Web Pages

The internet is a vast expanse of information, but sifting through it can be a daunting task. Researchers have been working on developing tools to help us navigate this digital landscape, and a new project called Tag-Pag takes aim at one specific problem: annotating web pages.


Tag-Pag is an application designed to simplify the process of categorizing web pages, which is crucial for researchers who scrape the internet to analyze online behavior or train machine learning models. Existing tools focus on annotating specific sections within text, but what about entire pages? That’s where Tag-Pag comes in.


The tool allows users to label an entire webpage as belonging to one or multiple predefined topics. It’s a feature that might seem simple, but it’s actually quite powerful. With Tag-Pag, researchers can quickly identify patterns and trends in online content without having to dig through individual articles or social media posts.


But how does it work? Tag-Pag uses libraries to extract two versions of the webpage’s content: cleaned text and raw text. The cleaned text removes boilerplate elements like menus and advertisements, while the raw text retains all HTML elements. This gives annotators a better understanding of the page’s structure and content.


The tool also parses URLs, which often contain relevant information about the page’s topic. And if you need to see the webpage in action, Tag-Pag allows you to open the scraped HTML, the live web page, or the latest version stored in the Wayback Machine.


Tag-Pag is designed with efficiency in mind. It includes features like quick navigation, label assignment, and export functionality, making it a versatile tool for researchers across various disciplines. The app also supports multiple annotators, allowing you to hide each other’s annotations and randomize task order to avoid priming effects.


In practical terms, Tag-Pag has the potential to revolutionize the way researchers analyze online data. By providing a systematic and efficient method for annotating web pages, it could help uncover new insights into how people interact with the internet. For example, researchers might use Tag-Pag to study online misinformation or political propaganda, or to develop more effective strategies for online advertising.


Tag-Pag is an open-source tool, available on GitHub for anyone to use and contribute to. Its development was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation), which is a testament to the project’s potential impact on scientific research.
