Cygnus X-3s Radio Outbursts: Insights into Binary Star System Dynamics

For decades, astronomers have been fascinated by Cygnus X-3, a binary star system that periodically erupts in powerful radio outbursts. These events are so intense that they can be detected from Earth, providing valuable insights into the system’s behavior and properties.


Recently, scientists used the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) to monitor Cygnus X-3 at 15.5 GHz throughout 2024. The AMI is a radio interferometer consisting of eight 12.8-meter diameter antennas that work together to create high-resolution images of the sky.


The researchers made observations on almost every day in 2024, with the exception of days plagued by bad weather or technical issues. Each observation consisted of multiple 10-minute scans of Cygnus X-3, interleaved with shorter observations of a nearby calibrator source.


The data were then processed using standard procedures to establish a flux density scale and correct for atmospheric conditions. The resulting light curve shows five large outbursts, with peak flux densities exceeding 5 Jy (janskys). These events are significant because they allow astronomers to study the properties of Cygnus X-3 in detail.


One notable aspect of these outbursts is their prelude. Prior to each event, the system’s emission was typically fainter than usual, remaining below 0.1 Jy for several weeks. This suggests that Cygnus X-3 may be building up energy before releasing it in a spectacular display.


The researchers also noticed that the system’s behavior changed towards the end of the year. Instead of being relatively quiet, Cygnus X-3 showed more variability day-to-day, with one observation even capturing clear variations over a period of about 1.8 hours.


The study provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of Cygnus X-3 and its binary companion. By monitoring this system closely, scientists can better understand the underlying processes that drive these powerful outbursts. Furthermore, the data collected by AMI will be useful for future studies, allowing researchers to refine their models and make more accurate predictions about the system’s behavior.


Ultimately, observations like these help us better comprehend the intricate workings of the universe, one binary star system at a time.
