HD 96670 is a star that appears to be an O-type giant, but its companion is not a black hole as expected. Instead, it’s a small, hot object with a mass similar to that of a mid-B star.
The discovery was made using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton space telescope. The team analyzed the star’s light curve, which revealed two eclipses, indicating that the companion is blocking the O-type giant’s light at regular intervals. This suggests that the system is a binary, with the two stars orbiting each other.
Further analysis of the data revealed that the companion is not a black hole, but rather a small, hot object with a temperature similar to that of a post-main-sequence star. The team also detected X-ray emission from the system, which is unusual for an O-type giant star. This suggests that there may be a wind-wind interaction between the two stars, leading to the production of high-energy particles.
The discovery of HD 96670 has implications for our understanding of binary evolution and the formation of massive stars. It challenges current theories about how massive stars interact with their companions and how they lose mass during their evolution.
The system’s properties are also unusual in that it appears to be a post-interaction system, where the companion has undergone significant mass loss due to interactions with its binary partner. This is unlike other systems of similar mass, which typically do not show such dramatic changes.
