A new study has shed light on the complex structure of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud, a region of space that’s home to numerous young stars and protostars. By analyzing data collected using the C2H molecule as a probe, researchers have discovered at least two distinct layers within the cloud, with one layer exhibiting a thickness of around 1 parsec.
The Ophiuchus molecular cloud is a fascinating region of space, full of activity and change. It’s thought to be around 137 light-years away from Earth, and is home to numerous young stars and protostars that are still in the process of forming. The cloud is also thought to be relatively nearby, making it an ideal target for astronomers who want to study the early stages of star formation.
To study the Ophiuchus molecular cloud, researchers used a molecule called C2H as a probe. This molecule is particularly useful because it’s sensitive to changes in density and temperature within the cloud, making it a powerful tool for mapping out its structure. By analyzing data collected using the C2H molecule, researchers were able to create detailed maps of the cloud’s density and velocity.
These maps revealed something unexpected: at least two distinct layers within the cloud. The first layer is thought to be around 1 parsec thick, which is relatively thin compared to other molecular clouds. This layer appears to be surrounded by a second, thicker layer that’s thought to be around 3-4 parsecs thick.
The discovery of these layers is significant because it suggests that the Ophiuchus molecular cloud may be more complex than previously thought. Previous studies have suggested that the cloud is relatively simple, with a single, uniform density and velocity structure. However, the new data suggests that this may not be the case, and that the cloud may be composed of multiple layers with different properties.
The implications of these findings are still being explored by researchers. One possibility is that the different layers within the cloud may be indicative of different stages of star formation. For example, the thin layer at the center of the cloud may be the site of active star formation, while the thicker layer surrounding it may be more quiescent.
Another possibility is that the different layers within the cloud are related to its complex history. The Ophiuchus molecular cloud has been studied extensively by astronomers over the years, and it’s known to have undergone several periods of intense star formation in the past.
