Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Screening: Artificial Intelligence Predicts Cardiovascular Risk with Unprecedented Accuracy

Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in detecting breast arterial calcification, a marker of cardiovascular risk that can be easily identified on routine mammograms. The study found that women with more severe calcification were at higher risk of developing major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes.


The team used artificial intelligence to automatically quantify the severity of breast arterial calcification from screening mammograms. They then followed up with patients over several years, tracking their cardiovascular health and identifying those who experienced a major adverse event.


The results showed that women with severe breast arterial calcification were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those with mild or moderate calcification. In fact, the risk was doubled for women with severe calcification compared to those with no calcification at all.
